  • The Front Gallery (map)

Fragments is a group exhibition featuring the work of six ANU School of Art & Design graduates: Eleanor Neumann, Jess Higgins, Lani Shea-An, Shanti Shea An, Romany Fairall and Mimi Fairall. Celebrating both the similarities and differences between each artist and their work, 'Fragments' serves as a common reference point for these six emerging Canberra artists.

Shanti Shea An artist statement: These recent paintings belong to an ongoing project centred around the act and activity of looking. This is informed in part by an enduring and profound appreciation for the writings of the late John Berger, whose essays on the idiosyncrasies of looking and painting have stayed with me during the past few years since finishing art school. However, they could also be understood in terms of a personal desire to simplify, or perhaps formalise my own process of approaching painting through description and observation. This practice of drawing upon and collaging found imagery and personal photographs allows me to not only see unrelated images side by side, it also makes their relation visible. More often than not, their connection is simply located at the site/sight of the painting. While possible meanings can be drawn from these associations – perhaps questions of longing or separation – nothing ever can be entirely resolved. While I find myself consistently fascinated by the way that humans inhabit and move through spaces, I am most interested in the impossibility of knowing what another person sees.
